This document provides additional information about the software for your TelePort modem. The following topics are discussed:

I. Compatible Modems
• GlobalFax 2.6.8 Software will work with the following Global Village modems:
- TelePort USB
- TelePort 56K V.90 Internal for Blue &White G3
- TelePort 56K V.90
- TelePort 56K K56flex
- TelePort 56K K56flex upgraded to V.90
- TelePort 56K x2
- TelePort 56K x2 upgraded to V.90
- TelePort 33.6 Internet Edition
- TelePort Platinum
- TelePort Platinum upgraded to 33.6
GlobalFax 2.6.8 cannot be used with Global Village modems not listed above. If you have a non-English (French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Swedish) version of GlobalFax, you should not use this updater as you will lose your translated software.
II. What's New in the GlobalFax Software
• GlobalFax User's Guide: If you are a user of GlobalFax version 2.5.x, GlobalFax 2.6.8 contains a number of new features and new interfaces. A new GlobalFax 2.6 User's Guide in PDF format has been placed in the Global Village Software folder at the root level of your hard drive. Adobe Acrobat Reader 2.1 or greater is required to view this document. If you do not have Acrobat Reader, it may be downloaded from Adobe's website at http://www.adobe.com.
• TelePort control panel: The TelePort control panel has been renamed GlobalFax Controls.
• "Y2K" compatibility: GlobalFax software has no functionality issues with Y2K. However, the Send At feature for scheduling faxes in a calendar year past the current calendar year has been fixed to enable scheduling past the year 1999.
• 10- and 11-digit dialing: GlobalFax software has been upgraded to allow for 10- and 11-digit dialing as this is or will soon become a requirement in some US area codes. To set up this feature:
1. From the Apple Menu, open Global Village Fax Center
2. From the Fax Center Setup menu, select Dialing
3. To access the 10- and 11-digit dialing setup window, click the Advanced Options button
Or...
1. Launch the Setup Helper application. The application is found at the root level of your hard drive : Global Village Software : Global Village Applications : Setup Helper. The application will take you through all setup options for faxing, including 11-digit dialing.
• Improved imaging: Fix for poor or "jaggie" fax imaging of fonts and imported images in PostScript applications.
• New location for address books: The GlobalFax Files and GlobalFax Personal folders are now located in the Global Village folder inside the Preferences folder in the System folder.
• Locations flexibility: GlobalFax now supports separate fax headers when a different location is specified (Office, Home, Other). To set up this feature, use Setup Helper (see above).
• Custom Cover Sheets and ClarisWorks: Fix for disappearing or blank custom cover sheets created in ClarisWorks.
• Fax Center and display Show Century: Fix for Fax Center log cosmetic problem when Show Century is enabled in the Date & Time control panel.
• "Stretched" forwarded faxes: Fix for "stretching" of some faxes received in Standard resolution from dedicated fax machines.
III. Installing the Software
Note: Do not move or rename any files or folders from the installer archive. This will prevent the Installer from running.
• Installing the GlobalFax 2.6.8 Software: Global Village recommends that you install the GlobalFax software after your modem is installed or connected to your Macintosh computer.
If you have previously installed FAXstf™ software that may have been included with your Macintosh, the GlobalFax installer will remove parts of that software and place them inside the Global Village Software folder in the Files Moved from System Folder folder. This will prevent conflicts between the two programs.
• Installing GlobalFax 2.6.8 Software Over a Previous Version of GlobalFax:
If you install the GlobalFax 2.6.8 over GlobalFax 2.5.x or earlier, you must do the following:
1. Re-enter your GlobalFax preferences (Dialing, Sending, Receiving, Station Name, etc.)
2. Use the Address Book submenu in the File menu to open fax address books
GlobalFax Preferences: You can re-enter your preferences, such as your local area code and long-distance prefix, in the Setup Helper application that comes with the GlobalFax software. The Setup Helper application launches automatically when you restart your Macintosh computer following installation. Note that setting GlobalFax software to automatically receive faxes is a preference; you must reset this option after installing the GlobalFax software.
Address books: You can open your old GlobalFax address books by choosing Open Other from the Open Address Book submenu in the File menu. A directory dialog box appears from which you can open an address book. Address books are located in the System Folder : Preferences : Global Village : GlobalFax Personal folder.
• "HP Background" Error Message at Installation: If you are installing GlobalFax software for your TelePort modem you may see an error message that includes: "...please quit 'HP Background'." If you experience this, move the file named HP Background out of the Extensions folder (located in the System Folder); restart your Macintosh; install the GlobalFax software. After installing your GlobalFax software, you may move the HP Background file back into the Extensions folder. Restart your Macintosh to re-enable the HP Background software. Newer versions of HP Background do not cause this condition.
• GlobalFax 2.6.8 and TelePort 33.6 Speakerphone are Incompatible: This version of the software is not compatible with the Global Village Call Center software which uses a different address book structure. Do not mix GlobalFax 2.6.8 with the Call Center or GlobalFax software that came with the TelePort Speakerphone.
IV. Anomalies
This section provides information about anomalies that you might encounter while using the modem and fax software.
• Icon and checkbox appearance: ATI video Extensions may alter the appearance of hard drive icons in the Global Village Installer, and in checkboxes in the Setup Helper. This is only a cosmetic problem. Visit the Apple Computer website at http://www.apple.com for possible updates.
• Global Village Fax Center icons using GlobalFax 2.6.x (OS 8.5/8.5.1): When dragging a scheduled or received fax or a log entry to the Scheduled, Received, or Delete icons in the Global Village Fax Center, the icons will not highlight. However, dropping the fax or log entry over any of the icons will properly execute the function (e.g. forwarding or deleting a fax). Apple has stated that this is a cosmetic issue with OS 8.5.x and will be fixed in OS 8.6.
• System-wide Platinum Appearance: When System-wide Platinum Appearance is disabled, the GlobalFax Status Menu may not draw properly with some applications.
• Maximum Throughput Option: If you have an AV Macintosh computer or a Power Macintosh computer with serial DMA, the GlobalFax Controls control panel has an additional check box labeled Maximum Throughput. As described in the GlobalFax 2.6 User’s Guide, this check box increases the maximum port rate up to 230,400 bps.
Note: Because the USB bus does not have serial port limitations, the Maximum Throughput checkbox does not appear in the GlobalFax Controls control panel if you have a TelePort USB modem. However, your modem still achieves the greatest possible throughput. If you have the TelePort Internal, the Maximum Throughput checkbox will appear.
Some communications applications do not have an option for selecting the port speed of 230,400 bps. However, if you enable the Maximum Throughput check box, you will receive a port speed of 230,400 bps.
Some applications do not expect the modem to return a CONNECT 230,400 message. To avoid any problems associated with this unexpected message, modify the modem’s initialization string to include a W2 command at the end. This command causes the modem to report its actual connection speed (for example, 14400, 28800, 49333, etc.) as opposed to the serial port rate.
• Status Display and 56K modems: The Global Village Status bar indicates how fast your modem is sending or receiving data. A filled bar indicates 56 Kbps, and the square overdrive indicator flashes for speeds over 56 Kbps (due to modem data compression). Because 56K technology only works for receiving, the status bar will only be partially filled when you are sending data or when you connect to a slower modem.
• "Ready/Connected" on Status Display: The Global Village Status bar will always show "Global Village" on some Macintosh computers that do not have traditional serial ports. If you are using a TelePort through a USB conversion device, the Status Display may always show "Ready."
• Modem Sound Can Be Adjusted or Turned Off from Many Applications: On an external modem, the modem speaker volume operates independently from the volume control in Apple’s Sound control panel. To adjust or turn off modem sounds, use the volume option in your telecommunications application. For an internal modem, you can use the Monitors & Sound control panel to adjust volume.
• Speaker Volume for Faxing Can Be Set from the Control Panel:
If you would like to adjust the speaker volume for when GlobalFax is sending a fax, you can use the volume slider in the GlobalFax Controls control panel.
• 640X480 Resolution Monitor: The GlobalFax software requires a monitor with at least 640X480 resolution for optimum viewing of its windows. For example, an Apple 12" RGB monitor is smaller than 640X480; some GlobalFax windows are not completely visible on that monitor.
• Fax Documents Named After Other Windows or Floating Palettes:
When you create a fax, the name of the imaged fax file is taken from the frontmost window of the application from which you are faxing. When faxing from certain applications, however, the fax name can be taken from another window or floating palette.
For instance, suppose that you are faxing a document named “Newsletter” from Adobe PageMaker. The imaged fax file might be called “Voyager” due to the tools palette. This discrepancy does not affect the fax, which will be sent normally. You can rename an imaged fax file from the Global Village Fax Center.
• Enable 14.4k bps Fax:
The Enable 14.4k bps Fax option in the Sending dialog box affects both sending and receiving faxes.
V. Compatibility Issues
This section contains information about conflicts between Global Village products and other software and hardware products, including the following:
• Applications
• Extensions and INITs
• Telecommunications applications
The following compatibility information is accurate as of the time of this release. Newer releases of these applications or the Apple system software might resolve these conflicts.
A. Applications
• DeltaGraph 1.5: Select QuickDraw, rather than PostScript, in the GlobalFax dialog box; otherwise, your fax will be blank.
• DesignWorks: GlobalFax software does not work with DesignWorks. You can copy your drawings out of DesignWorks and paste them into a drawing or paint program before faxing.
• GlobalFax 2.6.8 and PowerPort modems: GlobalFax 2.6.8 is not compatible with GlobalFax software for PowerPort modems. If you want to use GlobalFax 2.6.8 with a TelePort modem on your PowerBook computer, you must first deinstall all PowerPort software (if installed) and then install the TelePort (GlobalFax 2.6.8) software.
Note: If you want to change back to faxing with your internal PowerPort modem, you must first deinstall the TelePort software and then reinstall your GlobalFax software for PowerPort modems. To deinstall the TelePort software, run the TelePort installer and choose Custom Remove from the Easy Install pop-up menu. Select all components and then click Remove.
• MacPaint 2.0: Users of MacPaint 2.0 can send only one fax from MacPaint without quitting the application and opening it again.
• OneWorld GlobalFax: GlobalFax 2.6.8 is not compatible with OneWorld software. Users of OneWorld Fax should continue using the latest compatible version of GlobalFax software (currently version 2.5.6).
• PageMaker and address books: When faxing from older versions of Adobe PageMaker, do not attempt to choose a different GlobalFax address book. Doing so can cause a crash. To use another address book, open Fax Center and change the default address book. PageMaker versions 6.0 and 6.5 do not crash when switching address books.
• PageNow!: When using PageNow! software be sure to set the baud rate above 300. Consult your manual included with PageNow! for instructions on how to configure the modem.
• Persuasion 3.0: Using the Chooser shortcut key to send a fax from Persuasion is not supported; an alert box appears if you attempt to use this method of sending a fax. To send a fax, select the GlobalFax printer driver in the Chooser. After you choose Fax from the File menu, the GlobalFax dialog box appears several times. Respond in the same way to each one.
• QuarkXPress: When faxing from QuarkXPress, do not enter text in the Find field to select a fax address from the address book. Select individuals and groups by clicking their names in the address list.
In addition, do not fax images with previews greater than 8 bits. Instead, import the image with an 8-bit preview before faxing.
• Quicken: To Option-fax from Quicken, you must first change the “Edit key” in Quicken to the Control key. To do so, open Quicken and choose Iconbar from the Settings menu. When the Iconbar dialog box appears, change the Quicken “Edit key” to the Control key.
If you have difficulty faxing from Quicken, try allocating more memory to the Quicken application.
• Ready, Set, Go!: Choosing the Printer Setup command (Fax Setup command if you hold down the Option key) from the File menu crashes your computer. Instead, choose the Page Setup command.
• Studio32, Photoshop, and ColorStudio: These applications may support printing to color printers only. Make sure that you choose a grayscale option from the Quality pop-up menu in the GlobalFax dialog box when you send a fax from one of these applications.
B. Extensions and Inits
• Users & Groups in MacOS 8: Opening the Users & Groups control panel while the Global Village Status Bar is active may crash the computer. To avoid this, first quit any program that is using the modem port. The crash does not occur with MacOS 8.5 and above.
• Central Point Software Trashback: GlobalFax software is incompatible with the CPTrashback extension.
• Finder Scripting extension and 5200/6300 Macintosh computers: If you have System 7.5.3 software and this computer configuration, you might receive an “out of memory” message after faxing an open window. The “out of memory” message appears after you choose another menu item.
• GateKeeper Aid: Versions of GateKeeper Aid prior to 1.2.6 are not compatible with GlobalFax software. If you are using GateKeeper Aid 1.2.6 or earlier, upgrade to a newer version.
• LaserWriter 8.0 printer driver: If you use the LaserWriter 8.0 printer driver, upgrade to the latest version. You might experience problems with LaserWriter 8.x printer drivers earlier than 8.3.3.
• Config PPP: If you are experiencing any problems using Config PPP, Global Village recommends that you use Apple's OT/PPP (MacOS 8.1 and earlier) or Remote Access (MacOS 8.5 and later).
• MacSlip 3.0.4 and 230,400 port speed: If you have an AV Macintosh computer or a Power Macintosh computer with serial DMA, and you set MacSlip's Speed setting to 115,200 or higher, MacSlip will display the warning "The selected serial port does not support 115,200 or 230,400." To set MacSlip to connect at 230,400, set MacSlip's Speed setting to 57,600 and make sure the Maximum Throughput option is selected in the GlobalFax Controls control panel. Maximum Throughput is only supported on Macintoshes with Serial DMA.
• Virex: Global Village Toolbox and some versions of Virex conflict at startup — Virex must load first. To ensure that Virex loads first, move Virex to your Extensions folder and rename it “aVirex,” or select Virex’s Load First startup option.
C. Telecommunications Software
• Apple Remote Access 3.0 Personal Server (ARA): GlobalFax is unable to send or receive faxes while ARA 3.0 Personal Server is set to answer calls. Disable call answering in ARA 3.0 Personal Server to send or receive faxes.
• Timbuktu Remote: When Timbuktu is set to answer calls, GlobalFax reports a PortInUse error if you have a fax queued to send after you restart your Macintosh computer. You can reschedule the fax, or allow GlobalFax to try to send the fax again. If you do not want to reschedule the fax, make sure that GlobalFax is set to more than one send attempts in the Sending Setup in the Global Village Fax Center.
Important: When your TelePort modem is set to receive faxes, you cannot answer calls with Timbuktu. Be sure to turn off Fax Receive in the Global Village Fax Center before putting Timbuktu in answer mode.
